Abstract

A diaper having a longitudinal axis, lateral margins, front and back waistline portions with a crotch portion therebetween, an inner surface for contact with the wearer and an outer surface. A longitudinally extending fold is provided on each side of the diaper axis and a portion of the outer surface in the diaper crotch portion adjacent one of the folds is secured to a similarly disposed outer surface portion adjacent the other fold. Description

40269 Thin invention n-Inlen l«> «ii;i|>rrn, mom pm't.Unilni*ly Iml not exclusively itlnposnble diapers. ;It is an object of the Invention to provide a diaper vhlch Is tapered In the crotch region to provide a good fit of the diaper on an infant, which provides a relatively large volume of absorbent material in the crotch region, and which can be relatively inexpensive and easy to manufacture. ;According to the present invention a diaper comprises an absorbent body, front and back waistline portions with a crotch region therebetween, an inner surface for contact with the wearer, an outer surface, a longitudinal fold on each side of a central longitudinal axis extending through mid-points of the waistline oortions, each of these folds bringing parts of the inner surface toother, and means holding parts of the outer surface adjacent these folds in Juxtaposition in the crotch region. ;h'ach of the folds may be substantially equidistant from the central longitudinal axis of the diaper and a lateral margin of the diaper. ;Adhesive-bearin/: tape may be used to hold the folds in .juxtaposition. ;The diaper may be of the disposable variety including a water-impervious backing sheet, an exposed surface of which constitutes the outer diaper surface. ;The invention may be performed in various ways, nn>l a specific embodiment, will now be described by way ;40869 ;of t»xnmplr> with rrfproncv* In thr nc«iompnnyJ n/» cirowin/rn, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a diaper embodying the invention in a partially opened out condition; and Figure 2 is a sectional view through the crotch region of the diaper in its fully opened out condition ready for application to an infant.' Referring to the drawings, a diaper 10 comprises an absorbent body 12 (e.g. conventional so-called "fluff") sandwiched between an outer waters-impervious backing sheet 14 of plastics material and a water-permeable inner liner 16. The diaper as packaged is provided with a fold 18 along the central longitudinal axis of the diaper, the fold bringing parts of the backing sheet 14 together. Longitudinal folds 20, 22 are disposed substantially midway between the central longitudinal axis and the respective lateral margins 24, 26 of the diaper. Each of the folds 20, 22 brings parts of the liner 16 together. In the longitudinally central, crotch region of the diaper, the folds 20, 22 are constrained so as to taper or pinch in the diaper in the crotch region. This constraint is accomplished by connecting a portion of the outer surface of the backing sheet 14 adjacent the fold 20 to a similar portion of the backing sheet 14 adjacent the fold 22. As best seen in Figure 2, this Is accomplished by means of a piece of adhesive-bearing tape 28 secured to the backing sheet 14 adjacent each of the folds 20, 22 so as to bring 3. 0269 those folds substantially, into contact in the crotch region of the diapeK In the crotch region, areas of the liner 16, which forms the diaper's Inner surface, may be secured to each other as by lines of adhesive 30.
In use, the waistline portions 32, 34 of the diaper may be opened out to apply the diaper to the infant, the longitudinal folds 20, 22 and the tape 28 cooperating to assure both a tapering of the diaper in the crotch region and the provision of multiple layers of the absorbent body 12 adjacent the infant in the crotch region. The lines of adhesive 30 assist in the flattening out of the fold 18 to provide a central loop 36 of the diaper which is held in the condition shown in Figure 2 by the constraint applied by the tape 28 and the lines of adhesive 30.
Various other means could, of course, be substituted for the tape 28. Also, varying degrees of taper and absorbent capacity in the crotch region can be achieved by altering the laternl location of the folds 20, 2? and by varying the separation of the folds 20, 22 as constrained, in the crotch region.
