Abstract
1419061 Surgical syringes HOECHST AG 20 Nov 1972 [20 Nov 1971] 53511/72 Heading A5R A two-chamber syringe comprises a hollow syringe body 1 attached to a solvent container 5 having a slidable piston 6 therein, and a hollow connector 3 attached to. the neck of a medicament container 2, the arrangement being such that relative axial movement of the syringe body and the connector causes a cannula 11 mounted on a support member 10 axially movable in the bore 9 of the syringe body to first pierce a membrane 16 of the connector and subsequently pierce a membrane 13 of the syringe body. As shown the syringe body and the connector are screw-threaded and respectively provided with an annular groove 17 and a raised bead to prevent premature perforation of the membranes. In alternative forms the connector may have a securing ring or be joined to the syringe body by spot welding to prevent premature perforation. The solvent and medicament containers are respectively attached to the syringe body and the connector by the engagement of a bead, e.g. the bead 4, with a flanged rim, e.g. the rim 21. In alternative forms the syringe body or connector is deformed into engagement with a flange of the respective container and may engage a ring beneath the flange. The solvent and medicament containers are each sealed by a rubber stopper, e.g. the stopper 8, and an aluminium cap, e.g. the cap 7, having a central aperture. In use, the connector is screwed onto the syringe body until the cannula, which is retained in the bore 9 by engagement of an annular projection 12 with a groove in the bore, pierces the membrane 16. After a shoulder A of the support member 10 has abutted a shoulder B of the connector, further rotation of the connector causes the cannula to pierce the membrane 13. A metal ring 15 is provided on the lower surface of the end 14 of the support member. Pressure exerted on a piston rod 19 causes the solvent to be conveyed to the medicament container and form a solution which is reconveyed to the solvent container by pulling back the piston 6. Subsequently the connector is removed and a needle 20 stored in the interior of the piston rod is attached to the frusto-conical end 14 of the support member. A finger support 22 is provided on the solvent container. The support member may be provided with longitudinal fins to ensure the cannula pierces the container seals centrally. The membrane of the syringe body may be in the form of a tightly fitting insert.
