Abstract
1338254 Powder blower FISONS Ltd 19 April 1971 [25 March 1970] 14544/70 Headings A5R and AST A device for dispensing finely dispersed powder into the nose, throat, or lung of a patient comprises an elongate housing having a passageway connected to means to force air through the passageway, and a chamber in the passageway to receive a container for the medicament, and perforating means which can reciprocate along the axis of the housing to perforate the container. The container is mounted in a chamber 4 of the housing 1 and may be perforated at both ends by a needle 7 mounted on a block 8 which can run longitudinally in a guide sleeve 9. The block 8 is attached to the end of a rubber bulb 14 and moved by pressing the bulb in the direction of arrow A. When the container has been pierced at both ends the bulb is released and returns to its normal position as air enters through a non-return valve 15. The perforating means are thus withdrawn to a position where a shoulder 17 of the block is forced against a projection 18 on the sleeve by the returning bulb. The bulb is then squeezed in the direction of arrows B and air is forced through the windows 13 in the sleeve and through the container, and the powder is blown from nosepiece 2 at the end of the housing. A perforated disc 11 prevents the spillage of powder into the bulb when the container is pierced, and has an aperture for the passage of the needle 7. In an alternative embodiment the needle is fixedly supported within a sleeve (21) which is longitudinally slidable about a second sleeve (9) which houses the chamber (4) and powder container, Fig. 2 (not shown).
