Abstract
The transfer layer of a pressure- or heat-sensitive transfer element (see Divisions D2 and G2) comprises a cellulose ether binder, imaging material and a mixture of two or more oleaginous modifying agents, and may be applied by deposition from solution. In the examples, the binder is ethylcellulose, the imaging material is a spirit-soluble black dye and the solvent is toluol; the other ingredients are: (Example 1) refined rapeseed oil, castor oil and graphite; and (Example 2) castor oil, mineral oil and butyl stearate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 833,631.ALSO:A transfer element comprises a flexible foundation of paper or plastics film and a transfer layer of cellulose-ether binder, imaging materal and a mixture of two or more oleaginous modifying agents. These modifying agents are so chosen that at least one, comprising at least 20% of the mixture, is substantially miscible with the binder, at least one comprising at least 20% of the mixture, is substantially immiscible with the binder, and the two are miscible with one another, or both are miscible with a third oleaginous material present to form a ternary mixture. The coating mixture contains a larger proportion by weight of the oleaginous materials than of the binder. The Specification includes lists of suitable oleaginous materials. The coating layer may be applied by deposition from a solution in a suitable solvent and may be transferred to a copy-receiving sheet by the local application of pressure, as by writing or typing, or by thermographic or electrophotographic (see Division G2). If the imaging material be spirit-soluble, copies made in any of these ways can be used as hectographic masters. Alternatively the imaging material may be one of a pair of colour-reactive substances, the other of which is present in the copy-receiving sheet or is brought in in the spirit process. In another modification the imaging material is a conventional pigment such as carbon black nigrosine, graphite or magnetic iron oxide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 833, 631.
