Abstract

550,332. Coated paper. GROAK, J. June 30, 1941, No. 8242. [Class 96] [Also in Group XVI] A set of transfer copying papers comprises at least one copy sheet carrying a colouring matter in an undissolved and dispersed condition, and at least one transfer sheet carrying a substance which, when transferred due to writing pressure brings the colouring matter into a dissolved condition exhibiting a colouration which contrasts with the unimpressed surface of the copy sheet. The colouring matter may be fat, oil or watersoluble dyestuff or dye base and may be applied as a dispersion in a non-solvent vehicle containing a binding agent such as casein, shellac or dextrin, or may be incorporated in the pulp from which the copy sheet is made. A pigment, e.g. titanium white, to mask the colour of the dye may be incorporated with the dye or may be applied as a coating over the treated copying paper. With fat- or oil-soluble dyestuffs, may be used volatile alcohols or esters thereof, waxes, fatty acids, esters of phthalic acid, phosphoric acid, or other organic or inorganic acids &c. For a water-soluble dyestuff, the transfer sheet may be coated with wax having a hygroscopic substance such as glycerine emulsified therewith. Starch grains may be incorporated also with the wax and glycerine coating as described in Specification 503,695, [Group XVI]. The transfer sheet may be a separate sheet interposed between the original and the copy sheet. The copy sheet may contain differently coloured areas or two or more different colours may be superposed; it may have a colour-bearing coating on one side and a solvent-bearing coating on the other. The paper may be impregnated or coated with a solvent-repellant e.g. casein. The coatings on either or both kinds of sheets may be protected by a film. of paraffin wax.
