Abstract

A thermoplastic composition comprises a mixture of from 1 to 50% by weight of an olefin copolymer in the form of particles having a diameter of less than 5 microns dispersed in from 99 to 50% by weight of a linear polyamide, the olefin copolymer containing from 0.1 to 10% mole of acid groups. Specified polyamides are those derived from dicarboxylic acids, e.g. oxalic, succinic, adipic, suberic, sebacic and terephthalic acid and diamines, e.g. hydrazine, ethylene diamine, pentamethylene diamine, hexamethylene diamine, decamethylene diamine, tetramethylene diamine, bis-(p-aminocyclohexyl) methane, p-phenylene diamine and m-phenylene diamine; or from amino acids or derivatives thereof, e.g. carbamic acid, 6-aminocaproic 11-aminoundecanoic acid, 12-aminostearic acid, leucine, b -phenylalanine and 1-aminocyclohexane carboxylic acid and copolyamides thereof. Specified copolymers are those derived from 1-olefines and a : b -unsaturated monocarboxylic acids; by graft polymerization of the acid comonomer to polyolefines and sulphonated ethylene-styrene copolymers. In the Examples: (1), (2), (3a) to (3c), (4), (5), (11) and (13) polyhexamethylene adipamide is blended with a copolymer of ethylene and methacrylic acid; (3d) to (3f) a copolymer of hexamethylene diamine, adipic acid and caprolactam is blended with a copolymer of ethylene and methacrylic acid; (6) polyhexamethylene adipamide is blended with a copolymer of propylene and undeconoic acid; (7) poly-butene-1 is graft polymerized and acrylic acid and the resultant polymer blended with polycaprolactam; (8) polyhexamethylene sebacamide is blended with the reaction product of isotactic poly-4-methyl-pentene-1 with a styrene-maleic acid copolymer; (9) a sulphonated copolymer ethylene and styrene is blended with polyhexamethylene adipamide; (10) a polyamide made from diethyl oxalate, 3-methoxy hexamethylene diamine and hexamethylene diamine is blended with an ethylenemethacrylic acid copolymer and (12) a phenyl isocyanate modified polyhexamethylene adipamide is blended with an ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymer.
