Abstract
1,241,361. Polyamide/ethylene copolymer blends. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 26 Feb., 1970 [11 March, 1969; 25 April, 1969 (2) ; 19 May, 1969; 6 Jan., 1970], Nos. 12754/69, 25427/69, 21314/69, 21315/69 and 595/70. Headings C3P and C3R. Thermoplastic polymer blends comprise a polyamide resin and a copolymer of ethylene with a hydroxy- or epoxy-substituted aliphatic or cycloaliphatic ester of an α,#-unsaturated acid having 3 to 6 carbon atoms, the ester radical having 2 to 10 carbon atoms in the alcohol residue. The polyamide may be derived from aminocarboxylic acids and lactams, e.g. #-aminocaproic acid, butyrolactam, pivalolactam, caprolactam, capryl-lactam, enantholactam, undecanolactam and dodecanolactam; polyamines, e.g. polymethylene diamines and C-alkylated derivatives, p-phenylenediamine and diaminodicyclohexylmethane; and dicarboxylic acids, e.g. iso- and terephthalic acids, oxalic acid and adipic, sebacic, suberic, azelaic, glutaric, pimelic and undecanedioic acids; and may be amine terminated or nucleated, e.g. with talc, calcium fluoride, graphite, sodium phenyl phosphinate, alumina, high melting polyamides or polytetrafluorethylene. The ethylene copolymer may be derived from hydroxyalkyl or glycidyl acrylates or methacrylates, and optionally olefins, styrene, vinyl ethers, unsaturated amides, amines or nitriles, N-vinyl carbazole vinyl chloride, vinyl esters or acrylic or methacrylic alkyl esters. The compositions may also contain diphenyl carbonate, carbon black and other conventional additives, and may be fabricated into shaped articles such as fibres, films, tubes and bottles. Many examples are given describing compositions comprising polyhexamethylene adipamide, polycaprolactam, polydodecanolactam, polyhexamethylene sebacamide, polyundecanolactam, polyhexamethylene isophthalamide, polyhexamethylene azelaiamide, copolymers of polyhexamethylene adipamide with polycaprolactam, polyhexamethylene isophthalamide and polyhexamethylene terephthalamide and polytrimethylhexamethylene oxamide / polyhexamethylene oxamide copolymer; copolymers of ethylene with hydroxyethyl methacrylate and optionally methyl methacrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate, styrene or vinyl acetate, or with hydroxypropyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate or glycidyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate; and optionally talc, calcium fluoride, diphenyl carbonate, calcium carbonate, aluminium silicate, polyethylene, sodium hypophosphite, carbon, 1,1,3 - tris - (2 - methyl - 4- hydroxy - 5 - t - butylphenyl) butane, diphenylamine/acetone condensate, #-(3,5-di-tbutyl - 4 - hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid and sodium phenyl phosphinate.
