Abstract

Fabrics comprising keratin fibres, e.g. wool, mohair, alpaca, cashmere, vicuna, guanaco, camel's hair or llama hair, alone or in admixture with polyamide, polyester, acrylic, cellulose acetate, viscose rayon or cotton fibres, are impregnated with a reducing agent and at least 3% by weight of the fabric of a swelling agent or a polyhydroxy compound having a molecular weight of not more than 4,000 and are then dried to a moisture content of less than 30% by weight under conditions such that they are rendered capable of being permanently set in a desired configuration without the addition thereto of moisture beyond the moisture regain level of the fabrics. Suitable reducing agents are alkanolamine sulphites containing up to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl chain, metallic formaldehyde sulphoxylates, alkali metal borohydrides, sulphites, bisulphites, meta bisulphites and hydrosulphites, ammonium bisulphite, sodium sulphide, cysteine hydrochloride, sodium hypophosphite, thiosulphate or dithionate, titanous p chloride, sulphurous acid, thioglycollic acid and its watersoluble salts, hydrogen sulphide, sodium or potassium hydrosulphide, butyl or ethyl mercaptan and b -mercapto ethanol. The swelling agent may be urea, guenidine hydrochloride, formamide, N, N-dimethyl formamide, acetamide, thiourea, phenol or lithium chloride, bromide or iodide and suitable polyhydroxy compounds are glycols having terminal hydroxyl groups separated by 2-10 methylene groups, 1, 2-propylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, 1, 3-butylene glycol, diethylene glycol, glycerine, quintenyl glycerine, diethyl glycerol, mesicerin, trimethylol ethane, trimethylol butane, trio-hydroxymethyl-amino methane and polyethylene glycols or polypropylene glyco ls having molecular weights of not more than 4000. The reducing agent and swelling agent or polyhydroxy compound may be applied to the fabric from the same or different aqueous solutions having a ptt of 3-10 in any desired sequence. The fabric may be allowed to stand for at least 10 minutes in its wetted state after impregnation and may be washed after treatment with either or both the reducing agent and swelling agent or polyhydroxy compound and may be dried at temperatures up to 250 DEG F. the fabric may subsequently be subjected to a semior full-decatising treatment or embossing treatment. It may be formed into garments and pleated or creased, pressing being effected at 260 DEG F. if desired with steaming.
