Abstract

A process for increasing the extent of polymerization and insolubility of a further polymerizable methylolphosphorus polymeric material containing at least one free methylol group attached to a phosphorus atom comprises reacting in solution the polymeric material and an alkali metal hydroxide and treating the resulting product with ammonia. In the treatment of cellulosic materials (the most important application) the process comprises impregnating a cellulosic material with a further polymerizable methylolphosphorus material containing an alkali metal hydroxide, drying the treated material, preferably at 85 DEG to 120 DEG C., treating the dried material with gaseous ammonia, and further treating with an aqueous ammonia system or by steaming in the presence of ammonia gas. The aqueous ammonia system may be aqueous ammonia or a salt of a weak acid, e.g. ammonium carbonate or carbamate. In an example (18) a tetrakishydroxymethyl phosphonium chloride (THPC)-urea precondensate is mixed with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. Ammonia is added to precipitate a resin which, after washing with hydrogen peroxide, is filtered off and dried. The polymer is flame-resistant. Other examples describe similar reactions in which the resin is produced on a cellulosic textile or on paper. Specification 906,314 also is referred to.ALSO:A process (applicable in the treatment of cellulosic materials) for increasing the extent of polymerization and insolubility of a further polymerizable methylolphosphorus material containing at least one free methylol group attached to a phosphorus atom comprises reacting in solution the polymeric material and an alkali metal hydroxide and treating the resulting product with ammonia. A cellulosic material is impregnated with a solution of further polymerizable methylol-phosphorus material containing an alkali metal hydroxide, the treated material is dried, preferably at 85 DEG to 120 DEG C., and the dried material is treated with gaseous ammonia and then further with an aqueous ammonia system or by steaming in the presence of ammonia gas. The aqueous ammonia system may comprise aqueous ammonia itself or a salt of a weak acid, e.g. ammonium carbonate or carbamate. In typical examples (1) cotton drill fabric is impregnated with a solution of a condensate of tetrakis hydroxymethyl phosphonium chloride and urea, a non-ionic wetting agent and sodium hydroxide. The fabric is dried at 85 DEG -90 DEG C., then exposed to an atmosphere of ammonia gas and finally impregnated with aqueous ammonia. After washing in soap and aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution the fabric is dried and shows increased flame resistance; (13) a similar process is applied to a filter paper, resistance to burning being imparted. In Example (5) cotton wool which has been similarly treated is dyed and found to have a deeper shade than when the treatment is p omitted. Specification 906,314 also is referred to.
