Abstract

<PICT:0997899/C6-C7/1> In an apparatus for coating part of the inner surface of a bulb, e.g. for a filament lamp or discharge tube, with a layer of metal 50 by vapour deposition, the part of the bulb which is not to be coated is screened by a rotatable, expansible skirt, which in a contracted rest condition can be inserted through the neck of the bulb, and which, upon rotation inside the bulb, opens out so that its periphery is close to, but does not touch, the inner surface of the bulb. As shown, a pleated or corrugated skirt 46 of polytetrafluoroethylene is secured to a head-piece 12 provided with magnets 20-22 and rotatable about a shaft 10 on support 5, under the influence of an external magnetic field produced by rotating magnets 34, 35. Initially skirt 46 falls downwardly, but insertion through the bulb neck forces it into the position shown. During rotation the skirt spreads into position 48 and afterwards droops downwardly as indicated at 54 so that it may easily be withdrawn from the bulb. The material 38 to be evaporated to form coating 50 is laid in heating filament 8.
