Abstract

997,604. Moulding footwear. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. Feb. 19, 1963 [May 23, 1962], No. 6606/63. Heading B5A. [Also in Division A3] A heel 1 of rubber or other elastomeric material has an insert 4 of nailable, thermoplastic material embedded in its attaching surface within a groove 5 which extends from points adjacent the breast edge 3 around the back of the heel and is bridged at 12 along the side portions of the heel. The heel is formed by placing a blank 16 in a niould 18 which has a grooved face 17 and a wall 13 breached at between two and five points along each side portion of the heel. A biscuit 19 of rubber is placed in the mould and the lid 20 closed. Curing is effected at a temperature between 310‹ and 350‹ F. during which rubber flows inwardly or, if an insert of larger than ideal size has been used, thermoplastic material flows outwardly, through the gaps in the wall 13. The wall 13 being continuous around the back of the heel tends to cause the insert to flow towards the breast edge at points 14 and 15.
