Abstract

1530645 Making footwear; soles PIRELLI Ltd 1 July 1977 [9 Sept 1976] 37506/76 Heading A3B Footwear of the type having discontinuities or gaps 2, 3, 4, 5 in the upper at the margin thereof is formed by placing a sealing blank between an insole 1 of an upper assembly and a last (not shown) carrying same; the blank being formed with projections 6, 7, 8, 9 corresponding to the gaps through which they extend whereby in a moulding operation to affix a rubber or plastics sole to the assembly, movement of sole material through the gaps into the upper region is prevented. Preferably the blank is of woven glass fibre, and informing the footwear, pre-shaped sole components including sponge rubber inserts and a polypropylene filler are inserted in a mould and fused and adhered to the upper assembly (see Fig. 3). Alternatively the sole may be formed by injection moulding.
