A protective helmet, Figs 1 and 2, comprises an outer moulded shell 2 of resinimpregnated fibres and an inner lining 4 of pliable material, such as cork, spaced from the outer shell by spacing members 6, which may be strips of cork secured to the inner surface of the shell to form an X-shape with its arms meeting at the top of the helmet. The lining 4 may be formed by bending an oval piece of cork, having tapered slits 10 around its circumference, in a cup shape. The lining 4 may be held in position by a band 12 of foamed plastic material secured to the shell around its inner periphery and by three looped concussion tapes 14 riveted to the shell and drawn together by a cord 16 and sewn to a stiff strip 18 adjacent the inner surface of the band 12. An annular fabric flap 20 is sewn to the strip 18 and turned upwardly inside the latter to hold a further band of foamed plastic material against the strip 18. The band 12, the strip 18, the annular flap 20 and the said further band constitute a headband. Ear flaps 8 are also sewn to the strip 18.
