Abstract

996,603. Wrenches. O. J. SWENSON. Oct. 16, 1961 [Oct. 21, 1960], No. 37043/61. Heading B4W. An impact wrench comprises a helical compression spring S in and lengthwise of a hollow handle H and an annular rotor member W which carries pawls 4 operating on a ratchettoothed portion 10 of a tool head T to produce successive impacts through force stored in and released by the spring incident to angular movement of the handle about the axis of the tool head. The spring S is self-supporting in the handle H, the left hand end of the spring being mounted on a push-rod 15 telescopically associated with the end coils of the spring and having a head 15a seated in a trough-shaped seat in the rotor W. The rotor and handle are provided with co-operating stops 35, 36, the latter comprising a metal cap 37, a rigid metallic support block 38 and an interposed elastic cushion 39. The member 37 may comprise spring metal, the cushion being omitted. The two sheet metal shells 2, 3 forming the handle have portions disposed remotely from the tool head and detachably secured against movement away from each other by a thrust plate 23 which is maintained in position by force of the spring S. The spring force setting- screw 22 is supported by thread engagement with the cup-shaped thrust plate 23. In a modification, Fig. 3, a tubular guide rod 117 for the spring has a head 117<SP>1</SP> having attached thereto a spring arm 60. The free end of the arm 60 extends through a hole in a slidable guard plate 61 to indicate the condition of compression of the power spring. The stop 36<SP>11</SP> comprises a pair of U-shaped members, each having one arm 38<SP>1</SP> secured to respective handle members 2a<SP>1</SP>, 3a<SP>1</SP> and a flexible arm 37<SP>1</SP>, the arms when brought into abutment by the rotor W, serving as a fixed stop. To convert the wrench to pure ratcheting action a blocking device is provided comprising a pawl or lever 45 pivotally mounted on one of the side plates 2<SP>1</SP> or 3<SP>1</SP> and having an externally-exposed operating handle 46 for preventing movement of the abutments away from one another.
