Abstract

995,865. Fuel injection pumps; starting fuel injection engines. C.A.V. Ltd. Feb. 25, 1963 [Feb. 26, 1962], No. 7332/62. Headings F1A and F1B. The plunger stroke and hence the discharge of a fuel injection pump of the rotary distributer type is controlled by metering the charge to the pump cylinder. The distributer passage 10 which connects with the pump bore 6 and outlet passage 11 has inlet passages 13 which communicate in turn with an inlet port 14 leading to a cylinder 23 having a shuttle 24. At other angular positions of the distributer the port 14 connects with longitudinal grooves 17 leading from a circumferential groove 15 connected to the outlet of the feed pump 2 so that the cylinder 24 is charged by the feed pump, liquid being discharged from the other end of the cylinder by the shuttle 24 via an adjustable throttle and stop member 25 to a passage 20 and circumferential groove 16 having longitudinal grooves 18 which in this position communicate with the pump inlet 21. When the passages 13 communicate with port 14 the grooves 18 communicate with the feed pump outlet 19 and passage 20 and the shuttle 24 is driven down to discharge a quantity of fuel to the pump bore 6, the quantity depending on the angular setting of the throttle 25, the maximum being controlled by the axial setting of the member 25. An excess fuel valve 29 is operable to connect the feed pump directly to the bore 10 for starting purposes. In a modification (Fig. 9, not shown) the grooves 15, 16 are disposed on each side of the shuttle 24 and the grooves 17 communicate alternately with the top and bottom of the shuttle while the grooves 18 connect the upper end with the casing around the cam ring.
