Abstract
995,605. Hypodermic injectors. AMALGAMATED DENTAL CO. Ltd. June 23, 1961 [Aug. 4, 1960], No. 27099/60. Heading A5R. A needleless hypodermic injector includes a plunger 17 for expelling medicament from a holder 5 through a jet aperture 13, thrust being directly transmitted to the plunger by a fluidoperated piston 15 of larger area, the piston cylinder being connected by a flexible pipe to an external source of pressurized fluid. A medicament cartridge 6 is secured in the medicament holder 5 by a screw cap 10. A rear cartridge stopper 8 is engaged by the plunger 17 and a forward cartridge closure diaphragm 9 is penetrated by a needle 14 on assembling a delivery tube 11, having a fine jet aperture 13, to the injector by the cap 10. The stroke of the piston 15 and the plunger 17 is limited by engagement of shoulders 21, 27 with corresponding shoulders 22, 28 on the cylinder and the medicament holder 5. The medicament holder is connected by screwthreads 26 to the pneumatic cylinder 1 so that it is longitudinally adjustable to vary the penetration of the plunger into the cartridge according to the dose to be ejected. The edge of a cap 22, which is secured to a collar 23 of the medicament holder, indicates the dose to be delivered on a scale on the cylinder 1. In a similar injector (Fig. 3, not shown), the piston is operated hydraulically. The piston cylinder 30 (Fig. 4) is connected by a flexible pipe to an hydraulic cylinder 52 in which a plunger 53 is moved by a lever linkage 54 operated by a plunger 56 moved in a cylinder 57 by compressed air supplied abruptly through a snap-action valve 60. The valve 60 may be operated pneumatically by a pedal or push-button.
