Abstract

995,460. Forage harvesters. T. J. SNELL. Dec. 13, 1963 [Sept. 13, 1962], No. 34919/62. Heading A1F. Relates to a forage-harvester of the kind wherein cutting elements 34 are freely pivoted at spaced points on the periphery of a central rotor 27 the elements having their cutting edges formed parallel to the axis of rotation on hook-like members curved forwardly and inwardly relatively to the direction of travel. According to the invention the cutting elements are arranged as a circumferential series in which successive elements are spaced axially of the rotor, the amount of axial spacing being such as to provide slight overlapping of the cutting elements which are so arranged that the rotor is dynamically balanced. The rotor comprises a tube 27 with stub-shafts 28, 29 rotatable in bearings 12 in the end walls of a housing 13 mounted on wheels 14 and including a horizontal discharge shoot 38 containing a vertically pivoted baffle 39 whereby discharge can be limited to part only of the working width of the machine. The rotor is driven from a gearbox 19 through belting 18, the drive being derived from the towing tractor (not shown). The cutting blades 34 are pivoted on U-shaped bearings 31 secured to the tube by diametrical bolts.
