Abstract

995,086. Outboard and inboard motors. JOHN HENRY VINCENT BEARD. May 21, 1962 [May 23, 1961], No. 18545/61. Heading B7V. An outboard or inboard motor for watercraft comprises an output shaft 7, disposed substantially vertically, and a propeller 1 fitted to rotate in a substantially horizontal plane. A cowl 2 is fitted over the propeller which acts to deflect the flow of water created by the propeller 1 through an angle of approximately 90 degrees, in a vertical plane, to effect propulsion of the craft. A further embodiment describes a cowl which may be pivoted so that the flow of water may be directed forward or aft or to a " no thrust " position.
