The single photoconductive layer of an electrophotographic material contains a mixture of coloured substances which is colour compensated in such a fashion that the layer appears achromatic. The coloured substances may be inorganic or organic photoconductors for example cadmium sulphide, oxazoles, azomethines, or triazines), optically sensitizing dyestuffs, pigments, fillers, or dyestuffs added merely as colour compensators. Good results are obtained with white photoconductors or photoconductor mixtures (for example, using zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, zinc sulphide, oxadiazoles, triazoles, or imidazoles) and particularly good results are obtained when a dyestuff sensitizer used with these is colour compensated by another dyestuff sensitizer. The photoconductive layer is prepared in the normal way and may contain resinous binders. A list of suitable binders is given. A list of common dyestuff sensitizers is given and the specific electrophotographic materials described use a colour compensated mixture of two or three of these in conjunction with zinc oxide and a silicone resin binder. In one of the examples the support is specified as being of paper.
