Abstract
994,444. Fluid-pressure brakes. N. O. SPAGNOLO. April 5, 1962, No. 13124/62. Heading F2F. A braking system for a train of vehicles hauled by a tractor wherein the braking of all the vehicles is controlled from the tractor comprises a brake control valve on the tractor connected to pipe 1, a compressed air reservoir A, a pressurecontrol unit B normally in communication with the reservoir A which communication is cut-off during braking by a spring-loaded valve E, a brake-control unit D connected to the brakes by a pipe 7 and a brake-accelerating valve C. When the driver opens the brake control valve a fall in pressure is produced in pipes 1, 2 and 3, the chamber 9 and also in the chamber 50 of the accelerating valve C. Due to the pressure in the reservoir A acting on the top of piston 55 in the valve C the fall of pressure in chamber 50 acts to open the valve 47 to vent the pipe 3, to atmosphere at 52 which will accelerate the decrease of pressure in chamber 9. The pressure in the reservoir A will move the plate 10 and diaphragm 13 to the right since air from both compartments of the valve E will escape into chamber 9 through holes 22 in plate 11 and similar holes (not shown) in the diaphragm 13. The valve 19 shuts off communication between the reservoir and the chamber 9 through ducts 60 and the displacement of the diaphragm will rock lever 23 to allow the spring-loaded valve 33 to close and to open spring- loaded valve 36 with the thrust disc 39 to permit compressed air from the reservoir A to flow through port 41 and pipes 6, 7 to the brakes. The compressed-air will also act through pipe 5 on a piston 43 in the accelerating valve C to move the piston upwardly and so close the valve 47. To release the brakes, compressed air is re-admitted into pipe 1 which acts to move the plate 10 and diaphragm 13 to the left so as to uncover the ducts 60 and to rock the lever 23 in a clockwise direction so as to open the valve 33 with the disc 30, spring 37 moving the valve 36 to close communication between the brakes and the reservoir A. The brakes and chamber 53 of the valve C are thus vented at 58 to atmosphere.
