In a braking system including a compressedair suspended brake actuator a change-over valve 11, selectively connecting one side of the actuator piston or diaphragm either to the compressed-air supply reservoir or to atmosphere, is controlled by a pedal-operated hydraulic master cylinder. The change-over valve comprises a piston 17 controlling ports 36 leading to atmosphere and biased by a spring 34 to open a spring-loaded valve 28 and connect a passage 10, from the air pressure reservoir, to a passage 33 leading to the said one side of the actuator piston. Brake pedal operation forces fluid through passage 14 to move to the right the piston 21 and the piston 17 connected thereto, to allow valve 28 to close and ports 36 to be uncovered to lower the pressure on one side of the actuator. The pressure differential across the actuator, and hence the braking force, depends on the degree of pedal depression. Piston 21 may be connected at 37 to an emergency hand control.
