Abstract
705,466. Fluid-pressure brakes. BENDIXWESTINGHOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO. Aug. 7, 1952 [Sept. 20, 1951], No. 19948/52. Class 103(1) [Also in Group XXIX] A compressed air actuated servo-device for hydraulic brakes is controlled by a pedal operated control valve unit 56 which provides " feel " and also gives a "follow-up action". As shown in the brakes released condition, chamber 54 on one side of the pressure piston 42 is open to atmosphere through passage 78, chamber 76, open exhaust valve 80, port 110 in valve control member 84, ports 106 and 104 and passage 102 to connection 100. When pressure is applied to the pedal, control member 84 is moved by sleeve 92<SP>1</SP> on compression of spring 114 to close valve 80 and open an inlet valve 74 which allows pressure to pass from a supply connection 70 by passage 68, port 66, chamber 64, and passage 78 to space 54. Movement of the piston 42 to the right under the pressure in space 54 carries with it the sleeve 58 and parts secured thereto so that valve 74 is reclosed and valve 80 opened and piston 42 retained in a new position. "Follow-up" action is thus provided, the limits of movement of sleeve 92<SP>1</SP> to which pressure is applied directly by pedal being defined by the shoulder 98 and abutment ring 96 on the member 58. " Feel " is provided by the action of a plunger 112, one face of which forms a seating for the spring 114 and the other being subject to pressure in chamber 54 through passages 78 and 113.
