Abstract
993,839. Toy projectiles. C. F. PALMER. May 5, 1964 [May 6, 1963], No. 18675/64. Heading A6S. A projectile has a nose cone with vanes which are in retracted position during upward projection but are urged into an outward position by internal forces at the top of the flight to produce rotation during fall with the nose cone still pointing upward. In the embodiments, the projectile simulates a space rocket during ascent and a helicopter during descent. The projectile may be hurled into the air by an elastic sling 40, Fig. 1, or by a CO 2 capsule 64, Fig. 8, or by means of an elastic loaded launcher 70, Fig. 10. In Fig. 1 spring-loaded piston 16 presses on the inturned ends 32, 34 of vanes 4. Wind resistance holds the vanes inward during flight, but at the top of the flight the pressure of the spring 20 opens out the vanes 4 ready for the downward flight. The second embodiment dispenses with the spring but has an adjustable elastic band 42 serving a similar purpose. In the embodiment of Fig. 10 a slotted ring 72 retains the vanes in position until fired when wind resistance during flight retains said vanes.
