Abstract

2 - Methyl - 1,3 - pentadiene is copolymerized with 4-methyl-1,3-pentadiene using a catalyst which is the reaction product of (a) a cobalt chloride pyridine complex and (b) an aluminium trialkyl or aluminium alkyl halide, the reaction product being activated by the presence of a catalytic amount of water. The preferred component (b) is aluminium diethylmonochloride and the polymerization is preferably carried out in a diluent, preferably benzene. The catalytic amount of water is preferably added in the form of a saturated solution in an inert liquid in which it is sparingly soluble, suitably the same liquid as the monomer diluent, the solvent for component (a) of the catalyst and the solvent for component (b) of the catalyst. Normally 75 mol. per cent of 2-methyl-1,3-pentadiene and 25 mol. per cent of 4-methyl-1,3-pentadiene are used. The copolymer may be vulcanized.
