Abstract

Solubilized collagen and scleroprotein is prepared by soaking the source material in aqueous alkali which is free from any agent which restrains swelling of the collagen or scleroprotein so as to bring the collagen or scleroprotein into solution, adding sufficient acid (preferably a mineral acid) to bring the solution to the isoelectric point of the protein, removing the precipitated protein and washing at the isoelectric pH, e.g. with a mineral acid solution. Optionally the product may be dissolved in an acid solution with a pH on the acid side of the isoelectric point, e.g. using a solution of tartaric, citric or lactic acid.
