[Also in Division B5] A control unit B for infinitely varying the stroke of a ram a of a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder A comprises a body b mounted on one end of the cylinder A and having a bore b<SP>3</SP> in which a member b<SP>1</SP> is longitudinally adjustable to vary the stroke, and a combined inlet and outlet port d<SP>3</SP> communicating with the cylinder through a first passage comprising an arcuate chamber c and a concentric bore b<SP>5</SP> both in the member b<SP>1</SP>, and a second passage comprising a longitudinal bore b<SP>9</SP> in the body b provided with a throttle valve d<SP>4</SP>. A rod C screwed into the member b<SP>1</SP> is rotatable by means of a hand wheel C<SP>1</SP> to adjust the longitudinal position of the member b<SP>1</SP>, which is prevented from rotating by a pin d engaging a slot d<SP>1</SP> in the member b<SP>1</SP>. In operation a projection, not shown, on the ram a enters the central bore in the member b<SP>1</SP> near the end of the return stroke, thereby preventing further discharge of fluid to the port d<SP>3</SP> along the bore b<SP>5</SP> so that fluid discharges solely through the bore b<SP>6</SP> whereby the ram is cushioned.
