Abstract
High molecular weight copolymers are made by copolymerizing acrolein with other vinylidene compounds in the presence of water and a catalyst consisting of a peroxide or azo compound together with an adduct of a polymer and sulphur dioxide or bisulphite, or a physical mixture of a polymer and sulphur dioxide or bisulphite. Comonomers specified for use with acrolein are styrene, acrylonitrile, ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate. Peroxides specified are potassium persulphate, hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide and tert.-butyl hydroperoxide. As an azo compound there is specified azoisobutyronitrile. As the other catalyst component, preferred is an adduct of polyacrolein and sulphur dioxide, but there may also be used physical mixtures of sulphur dioxide or bisulphite with polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl carbazole, polyvinylamine hydrochloride, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyglycol, cellulose ethers, polyguanidine and gelatine.
