Abstract
Graft copolymers are made by polymerizing in bulk or in solution in an organic solvent one or more ethylenic nitrogen-containing monomers, if desired with from 1 to 50% of one or more ethylenic comonomers (calculated on the total weight of the monomers) with the aid of a free-radical initiator and in the absence of water, on to one or more 1,2-epoxy-hydrocarbon polymers, each containing 5 to 50,000 units of the formula: <FORM:0969965/C3/1> in which R is a hydrogen atom or a C1-C6 alkyl or a phenyl radical, the nitrogen-containing monomer(s) and the preformed polymer being used in a weight ratio of 99:1 to 1:99 parts respectively. Nitrogen containing monomers specified are acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide and vinylidene cyanide. Comonomers specified are vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, acrylic and methacrylic esters, styrene and isobutylene. 1,2-epoxy-hydrocarbon polymers specified are polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene and polyisobutylene glycols, polystyrene oxide; copolymers of two or more of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, 1,2-epoxy-butane, 1,2-isobutylene oxide and chloroprene oxide, oxyethylated polypropylene and polybutylene glycols and propylene oxide/butylene oxide copolymers, and polyalkylene glycols whose terminal hydroxyl groups are esterified etherified, or aminated on one or both sides with monofunctional or polyfunctional compounds. Free-radical initiators specified are organic peroxides and percarbonates, ammonium persulphate, azobisisobutyronitrile, a dibenzoyl peroxide/benzoin redox system, or ultra-violet light. Suitable solvents for use when the process is carried out in solution are C1-C4 saturated aliphatic alcohols and acetic esters thereof, C3-C5 saturated ketones, dimethyl sulphoxide, dimethyl formamide and benzene. The examples describe the graft polymerization of acrylonitrile and a mixture thereof with acrylamide on to polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol and an oxyethylated polypropylene glycol. Specifications 715,194, 733,093 and 742,900 are referred to.
