Abstract

991,962. Two-part couplings. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Dec. 13, 1963 [Dec. 20, 1962], No. 49437/63. Heading H2E. A jack for use in explosive gas atmospheres is arranged so that as the plug 20 is connected to the jack the pin 26 bears against spring contacts 25 and on further insertion of the pin 26, an actuator spring 31 having an insulated pusher 32 is urged by the contact spring 25 to operate a micro-switch 45 which causes the contact springs to be energized. The actuator spring may bear directly on the contact spring 52 (Fig. 6, not shown) or one of the contact springs may operate the micro-switch directly (Fig. 7, not shown). The pin of the plug may be tapered in order to prevent arcing caused by the spring contacts bouncing along the pin during insertion of the pin into the jack.
