Abstract
991,875. Filters for liquids. LANCASTER & TONGE Ltd. May 23, 1961 [May 31, 1960], No. 19158/60. Heading B1D. A strainer for removing extraneous matter from water comprises an outer casing A having an inlet a and outlet a 1 , and a normally stationary, perforate cylindrical screen B carried on a vertical shaft and capable of rotation within the casing, the water passing through the interstices of the screen and then over the top of the screen to the outlet. A second outlet D from the casing is connected to a nozzle C which extends the whole length of, and around part of the circumference of, the screen, and means, e.g. manually operated spur gearing F, Fig. 1 (not shown), are provided for rotating the screen, and a closure valve (not shown) is fitted on the outlet D to open it to atmosphere, when it is required to backflush the extraneous matter from the screen surface by a passage of water through the screen from the inside and out through the nozzle due to a drop in pressure therebetween, in conjunction with a scraper E to loosen the extraneous matter from the surface of the screen. A drain plug a5, Fig. 1 (not shown) may be provided for the removal of any solid matter which may pass through the screen and settle at the bottom of the casing. In a modification, Fig. 4, the spur gearing is replaced by a motor-operated speed-reduction gear which, together with the valve on the outlet D, is operated and controlled by the difference in pressure between the outlet a 1 and the inlet a.
