Abstract
991,436. Hydrodynamic torque converters. TWIN DISC CLUTCH CO. Oct. 29, 1962 [July 11, 1962], No. 40837/62. Heading F2C. [Also in Division B3] A hydrodynamic torque converter comprises an impeller 15, a turbine 19 and a stator 26 which may either be permanently fixed or may be mounted by means of a one-way brake 31, and the blades 17, 22, 29 of the impeller, turbine and startor are simply curved and devoid of twist so that they may be cast in one piece with the respective outer and core rings 12 and 16, 20 and 21, and 27 and 28 by the sand moulding method. The shape and relative dimensions of the torus are specified in detail, and the possible range in the number of blades of the pump, turbine and stator and their inlet and outlet angles &c. are also specified. The impeller and the turbine are manufactured in the same way, and considering the impeller, master blades are mounted on a first mould ring corresponding in shape with the outer ring 12 and are abutted by a second mould ring corresponding to the core ring 16. This assembly is then placed in a core box to receive the moulding sand, either by way of shell or common sand moulding. When the sand has cured, the first mould ring, corresponding to the outer ring 12, and the master blades are moved away from the sand core, the master blades having a suitable draught for this purpose. The stator is made somewhat differently, master blades identical in shape to the stator blades 29 being positioned between mould rings corresponding to the outer and core rings 27, 28. The assembly is then placed in a core box to receive, the moulding sand, and after curing the mould rings are separated, the mould ring corresponding to the core 28 being diametrically split for separation in a radial plane, and the ring corresponding to the outer ring being split transversely to the axis for axial separation. The master blades are then removed by individually driving them inwardly towards the axis of the sand core.
