Abstract

991,128. Filtering and purifying liquids. UNION TANK CAR CO. Feb. 12, 1962 [Aug. 24, 1961], No. 5318/62. Heading B1D. A filter element of fabric, wire mesh or paper is pre-coated with a layer of powdered ionexchange resin so that both dissolved and undissolved materials are removed from liquid passed therethrough. A pre-coat tank 7 is filled with a slurry of ion-exchange resin and water and a filter tank 1 with demineralized water. Initial circulation is from tank 7 through pump 9, tank 1, leaf filter elements 5, and pipes 4 and 17 back to tank 7. Subsequently, flow through tank 7 is by-passed by opening a valve 23. Then valves 12 and 23 are closed (valves 10 and 21 being already closed) and valves 14 and 20 opened in feed line 13 and water service line 16 respectively, for normal filtration. On exhaustion the resins are washed off the filter leaves through drain 25, and recovered from the drain water for regeneration.
