Abstract
1,102,367. Ion-exchange. PERMUTIT CO. Ltd. 16 Jan., 1967. [3 Feb., 1966], No. 4826/ 66. Heading B1J. In an ion-exchange vessel with either a transverse plate or a collecting and distributing lateral pipe system supporting resin there are a number of strainers mounted in the plate or system. Each strainer comprises a short tube 4 closed at its upper end and formed with slits 6 through which liquid but not resin can pass into the interior of the tube and through the plate or into the pipes. Liquid to be treated flows downwardly through the bed and through the strainers into the space below the plate or the pipes which are normally full of liquid and thence to service. The bed is treated during regeneration by introduction of air or liquid into the space below the plate or into the pipes to flow upwardly through the strainers, the bed and to waste. Each strainer extends downwardly below the plate or into the pipes so that the lower end of each strainer remains immersed in liquid when air is introduced into the space and the air is thereby prevented from flowing up through the slits and a separate air passage of suitable size 10 and 8 is provided through or past each strainer to ensure that the air is uniformly distributed among the strainers. A one way valve comprising a captive ball (12) may prevent or restrict upward flow of air through the slits (Fig. 2, not shown).
