In a rotary internal combustion engine of the n, n+ 1 lobe type, poppet valves 6, 6<SP>1</SP> are operated by cams 7. The cams are of epicycloidal or hypocycloidal form, according to whether there is one more lobe, or one less, respectively, on the rotor than on the stator, and has portions 11 or 12 raised above the epicycloidal or hypercycloidal surface for lifting the valves.
