Abstract

Vinyl fluoride is separated from a mixture of gases comprising vinyl fluoride and acetylene by contacting the mixture of gases with a solvent or solvent mixture in which the solubilities of vinyl fluoride and acetylene are in tbe ratio of from 1:2 to 1:4 and which does not dissolve vinyl fluoride when saturated with acetylene. Solvents mentioned are dimethyl formamide and dimethyl sulphoxide. In the example given, a gas mixture containing 67% vinyl fluoride is passed up a packed column countercurrent to a stream of dimethyl formamide, at 0 DEG C., and the gas emerging at the top is 99,2% vinyl fluoride. The solvent leaving the column is stripped to remove the acetylene dissolved in it.
