Abstract

990,445. Air cooled disc brakes. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. July 19, 1963 [July 23, 1962; May 21, 1963], No. 28610/63. Heading F2E. A wheel-brake has a torque plate 13 on the axle 1, carrying means 24 for compressing together a stack of discs comprising discs 20 splined to the inner periphery of the wheel at, 21 and discs 22 splined to a torque hub at 17, and a plurality of means 28 for circulating air close to the discs. The torque plate 13 carries the torque hub 17. The wheel rim 2 is in two parts 5 and 6 bolted together. The discs are held between a pressure plate 18 and a pressure plate 25 and are compressed by the pistons 24 of a number of hydraulic cylinders (see Fig. 2) which are cooled by air circulating from holes 13a. The pressure plate 25 is held against the discs by springs 26 and rods 27 spaced around the torque plate 13. The means 28 for circulating air round the discs comprises four high-speed fans with motors 31 located dismountably in ears 34 circumferentially around the torque plate. Openings 11 and 11a in the wheel-flange and the lightening holes 17 in the torque hub provide channels for the circulating air which also passes under the inner tyrebead seat of the wheel to cool it.
