Abstract
A continuous process for the hydrogenolysis of a reducible sugar comprises reacting a carbohydrate hydrogenolysis process residue depleted of a glycerol and glycols with hydrogen at an elevated temperature in the presence of a cracking additive and a hydrogenation catalyst to form a first hydrogenolysis product, mixing this product with a feed of reducible sugar and reacting the mixture with hydrogen at an elevated temperature in the presence of a cracking additive and a hydrogenation catalyst to form a second hydrogenolysis product, and separating glycerin and glycols from the latter product leaving another hydrogenolysis porous residue. The preferred catalyst is nickel promoted by iron. Suitable cracking additives are, for example, calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate or salts of calcium and weak acids.
