Abstract

Granular cleaning compositions which are particularly suitable for cleaning hard surfaces, and having a bulk density less than 80% of the average bulk density of the dry particulate components thereof, are prepared by agitating 70-96 parts of one or more alkali metal orthophosphates, tripolyphosphates, pyrophosphates, carbonates, bicarbonates, sesquicarbonates and tetraborates, of which salts all are in discrete particulate form and pass a 10-mesh Tyler screen and at least one has a water of hydration content substantially below its capacity, spraying the mixture with an aqueous solution containing 20-50% of an organic adhesive which, when dried, is resoluble in water in such amount that 1-10 parts of adhesive dissolved in 3-20 parts water are added to the mixture, and removing enough water from the adhesive solution by hydration of the salts to form a dehydrated adhesive, thereby causing agglomeration of the mixture into granules, preferably so that at least 75% of the particles are of a size 20-100 mesh (Tyler). The preferred salt is trisodium orthophosphate, and suitable adhesives are various starches and dextrins, gum tragacanth, quince seed gum and water-soluble glues. The adhesive solution preferably contains borax and a mould preventative such as orthophenylphenol sodium salt. The composition preferably also includes at least 1% of such non-cationic detergents as alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates, fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates and sulphonates, fatty acyl esters of hydroxyalkane sulphonates, acyl taurides, alkyl oxyethylene sulphates, and ethylene oxide condensates with alkylphenols, fatty acids and fatty alcohols, but most suitably sodium C10- 18-alkyl sulphate or C9- 15-alkylbenzene sulphonate. Preferably the adhesive solution is used in an amount of 0.04-0.1 parts per part of dry salt mix, with the total water content of the final composition amounting to less than 40%. If desired, the liquid sprayed on to the hydratable salts may contain a pigment, e.g. a mixture of phthalocyanine blue and Polar Brilliant Blue, so as to produce brightly coloured granules having a chroma (Mansell) of at least 4, a Munsell value gf 4-7 and a minimum dimension greater than 0.2 mm.; alternatively the pigment may be sprayed on to the agglomerated mixture. Such coloured compositions may then be mixed with white compositions to produce speckled compositions. Sodium sulphate (as impurity in the detergent) may also be present, and the granules may be compressed to form tablets. Specification 808,668 is referred to.
