[Also in Division B7] An artificial island comprises a buoyant caisson 1 submerged under the pull of anchor rodes 3-6 extending from the sides of the caisson (see Division B7), whereby the caisson is . held by opposing torques while yielding to slow vertical movement with the tides against the resilient pull of the catenary sags in the rodes. The caisson may form an off-shore oil well rig (Figs. 6 and 9) having buoyancy regulating tanks 7, gear for the well drilling rig, a chamber 14 from which extends an air supply and escape shaft 15 supported by a raft 16, a shaft 13 and an elevator 12. The submerged island may constitute a manned operating base with submarine berthing and communication facilities in which case the caisson has a blister 18 (Figs 14-16) with a flared entrance 19 and an entrance hatch 22 so that the submarine may be brought under the blister with a hatchway on the deck of the submarine located under the entrance hatch 22. A compartment 23 gives access to the caisson proper, the shell and blister of which are triple and quilted, the outer set of spaces being filled with liquid and the inner set with air.
