In an electrical rotating machine, e.g. D.C. motor, of the flat annular air-gap type having a stator member carrying a ring 5 of permanent magnet poles, and a discoidal rotor member 1 carrying a printed circuit winding having active portions 11 extended at each end by either inclined or curved inactive portions 12, 13, the magnetic flux in the air-gap is increased by giving the ring 5 a greater radial extent than that of the winding active portions and providing the poles with shoes 7 protruding into the air-gap to form one boundary surface thereof, the radial extent of the shoes at such surface equalling that of the winding active portions. In the embodiment shown, the ring 5 is an axially magnetized integral ring of coercive material to the air-gap face of which the magnetically soft shoes 7 are applied, but in another embodiment, not shown, the ring comprises an assembly of alternate sector-shaped pole shoes and circumferentially magnetized magnets. The air-gap faces of the pole shoes may be shaped to correspond with that of the winding active portion, and the stator is completed by yokes 4, 6, mounting plates 8, 10, and brushes 9.
