In a multicylinder engine having a pair of intake valves 4, 5, in each cylinder, with the valves 4 connected to one joint manifold 7 and the valves 5 connected to a different manifold 13, the throttle valve 15 of one of the carburetters 8, 14, associated with the respective manifolds is controlled by a speed responsive device 19 so that it remains closed up to a predetermined speed and is then opened in dependence upon speed. The throttle valve 9 is controlled manually.
