Apparatus for opening up fibrous bundles of crude asbestos from the source rock comprises a stationary pipe coil 1 connected with a pump 12 coupled to a motor 17 through a variable speed gear 18, the pump being adapted to force a mixture of the asbestos and liquid contained in a reservoir 16 through the coil. The coil is disposed between two cylinders 2, 3. The uppermost pipe length 9 of the coil is connected to a two-way cock 13 from which a conduit 14 leads to where the opened up fibrous material is subjected to further treatment. The axis of the coil may, alternatively, be horizontal or inclined and the fibre mixture may be fed through the coil from above.
