Abstract
In a process for dispersing pigmentary materials in plastic polymeric materials by vigorous high-shear milling, the plastic polymeric material is preliminarily comminuted while simultaneously and intimately mixing it with the pigmentary material and so producing a finely divided pigment-polymer blend, the polymer particles of which are coated with the pigment. The plastic material may be fed to the comminuting step in particulate form, e.g. less than about 0.75 inch, while the maximum dimension of the pigment-coated polymer particles may be 0.01 to 0.15 inch, preferably 0.01 to 0.05 inch. 5 to 50 parts of the pigment per 100 polymer may be processed in the preliminary step. Specified polymers are natural rubber, butadiene-styrene copolymers, butyl rubbers, halogenated butyl rubbers, polyisobutylene, butadiene and isoprene polymers, butadiene acrylonitrile copolymers and ethylene-propylene copolymers. Carbon black is a specified pigment. The product may be further compounded with conventional compounding ingredients.
