Abstract
4,4-Dimethyl-m-dioxane is prepared by reacting isobutene with formaldehyde in the presence of catalysts comprising cation exchange resins based on cross-linked aromatic vinyl polymers and containing sulphonic acid groups. Suitable aromatic vinyl compounds for use in the production of the polymers are styrene, vinyl toluenes, vinyl naphthalenes, vinylethyl benzenes, methyl styrenes, vinyl chlorbenzenes and vinyl xylenes. The vinyl compounds may contain sulphonic groups or sulphonic groups may be introduced into the polymers. Polymers already containing sulphonic groups may have further sulphonic groups introduced by treatment with oleum. Advantageously, the reaction is carried out in several reactors in series with thorough mixing of the reactants. Preferably, the reaction is carried out at 50-120 DEG C. at a pressure higher than the vapour pressure of the hydrocarbon at the reaction temperature and C4 fractions from thermal or catalytic processes are suitable for use as starting materials. In some cases some tert-butanol is obtained as by-product. Specification 974,834 is referred to.
