Abstract
<PICT:0988440/C1/1> Score lines along which sheet glass is to be subsequently cut are detected by passing through the material a thin-beam of light and detecting variations in the amount of light passed when the beam encounters a line. Light from a lamp 4 illuminates a slit 19 to form a thin beam of light parallel to the lines on a glass sheet moving across the window 21. The light passing is reflected by a mirror 41 to pass back through the glass sheet to a photo-electric cell 30. Slits 50 and 40 are located in front of the mirror 41 and the photo-electric cell 30 respectively. Each score line gives rise to photo-electric cell pulses when it crosses the axes X-X1 and Y-Y1, and the first only of these may be selected by using it to trigger a monostable blanking circuit having a time constant greater than the interval between the pulses. The light source and photo-electric cell may be displaced through 90 degrees to a plane at right angles to the direction of sheet feed, in which case only one pulse is produced.
