Abstract

1,091,334. Photo-electric detection of web faults. EASTMAN KODAK CO. March 9, 1965 [March 9, 1964], No.9846/65. Heading G1A. In an apparatus for detecting streak faults Fig. 1 (not shown) in a web (10), such as a film having several coatings and being moved through an inspection station (11), energy to which the web is translucent is applied to one side from a source (16), and detector means responsive to the transmission of energy through the web is driven to scan the web laterally. The source may be a source of infrared light and the individual detectors (20) if more than one is used may be instantaneously responsive only to the transmission of energy through a narrow region (28) of substantial length in the direction of web motion. Light from the source is applied through a filter (14) and a plurality of slotted masks (13). Photocells (40) are mounted behind lenses (20) on a mounting (22) which is driven to oscillate across the web by a motor (21) to scan substantially the whole width of the web at a frequency of 3 C. P. S. Signals due solely to scanning are suppressed in a narrow band and the amplified outputs arising from a fault are applied through a high-pass filter to bus-bars whereby fault pulses control a multivibrator and, through a delay device, a sorter for rejecting chopped faulty sheets.
