Abstract
Zinc oxide pigment material, in which the individual particles consist of a core and a zinc oxide coating, is obtained by atmospheric oxidation of vaporized zinc and deposition of the zinc oxide, as it is formed, upon particles of an inert heat-resistant material, e.g. TiO2, SiO2, BaSO4 or mica. Zinc vapour is produced by evaporation of zinc metal in a muffle furnace or by reduction of oxidic zinc material. The inert core material may be injected by a reducing gas into the zinc vapour or it may be charged during the subsequent oxidation step, the quantity of core variable between wide limits-for example an excess relative to the zinc oxide may be supplied. In such a case one part of the overall pigment surface consists of ZnO and the rest, of the core material; this has particular application when the core is a second pigmentary material, e.g. TiO2.ALSO:Zinc oxide, which is formed in situ by the oxidation of zinc vapour, is deposited from the vapour phase on to particles of TiO2.SiO2, barium sulphate, micro talcum, or micro mica. The zinc vapour may be produced by evaporation of zinc metal in a muffle furnace or by reduction of oxidic zinc material.
