Abstract

In a process for making copolyesters by slowly adding an alkaline aqueous solution of bisphenol A to a mixture of terephthaloyl chloride and isophthaloyl chloride dissolved in a solvent which also dissolves the copolyester, improved products are obtained by slowly adding an aqueous alkaline solution of a monohydric phenol to the solution of the acid chlorides simultaneously with the addition of the bisphenol solution. Copolyesters having a favourable molecular weight distribution are obtained if the addition of the monohydric phenol solution is commenced after about 40% of the bisphenol has been added. Catalysts for the reaction are quarternary ammonium and phosphonium compounds. Specified monohydric phenols are phenol, cresols, xylenols and p-phenylphenol. In the examples, the acid chlorides were dissolved in methylene chloride and the phenols in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution. The copolyesters may be extruded or injection moulded.
