Abstract
In a process for the manufacture of thermoplastic epoxy resins, by reacting a diglycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol with a substantially equimolar proportion of a dihydric phenol in the presence of a catalyst and a solvent, a prepolymer resin is prepared by carrying out the reaction in the presence of a catalytic proportion of a quaternary ammonium salt and 0.1-3 wt. per cent of difunctional agent is added to the prepolymer solution to increase the average molecular weight of the prepolymer. The difunctional agent may be a di-isocyanate, a di-isothiocyanate or mixture thereof; an acyl halide of a dicarboxylic acid; a dicarboxylic anhydride in the presence of an acidic or basic catalyst; a dialkyl ester of a dicarboxylic acid in the presence of an acidic or basic catalyst; or a pure diglycidyl ether of a diphenol in the presence of an amine or a Lewis acid. The polymer solutions are useful as coating compositions.ALSO:Steel panels which may be prime coated are coated with solutions of thermoplastic epoxy resins obtained by reacting a diglycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol with a substantially equimolar amount of a dihydric phenol in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt as a catalyst and of a solvent and modifying the prepolymer so formed with a di-isocyanate to increase the average molecular weight of the prepolymer. The coated panels are baked to remove the solvent.
