Abstract

986,490. Electrostatic precipitators. AMERICAN AIR FILTER CO. Inc. Oct. 11, 1961 [Oct. 21, 1960], No. 36503/61. Heading B2J. In an electrostatic filter, electrode plates are held in parallel spaced alignment perpendicular to their planes by spacer bars 11. which each have transversely slotted longitudinal fins 12 radiating from diametrically opposed positions on the bar, the bars being inserted through aligned elliptical apertures 8 in the plates with the, fins 12 disposed on the major axes Y-Y of the apertures, and then turned through 90 degrees so that the slots 13, 13<SP>3</SP> in the fins 12 tightly wedge with raised surfaces 16, 16<SP>1</SP> bounding the apertures 8 around their minor axes X-X. The wedging action not only locates the plates but serves to strengthen them by localized distortion. As shown, an electrode assembly comprises spaced plates 4 suported between end plates 3 screwed to the ends of spacer bars 11, the end plates 3 being connected by insulators 7 to plates 6 which are earthed to a casing (not shown) and in turn support spaced plates 5, interleaving the plates 4, on bars 11. The plates 4 and 5, 6 have clearance apertures 10 for passage therethrough of the bars 11 supporting the plates 5, 6 and 4 respectively.
